Diurnal and Nocturnal Lizards

The main difference in the care of Diurnal and Nocturnal lizards is the lighting. Nocturnal lizards require no special lighting except perhaps to regulate their body clock. Day active (Diurnal) lizards on the other hand require special lighting during the day. This type of lighting is known as UVB which is a type of ultraviolet light but not in the same spectrum as "black lights." Diurnal lizards require UVB lighting in order to produce vitamin D3 which is essential for the metabolism of calcium. Without it, your lizard will end up with Metabolic Bone Disease (also known as MBD) which is a crippling condition resulting in severe skeletal deformaties.

UVB can be provided for your lizard by using specially designed fluorescent bulbs and can be found on this part of our website : (Fluorescent UVB Bulbs. These bulbs will need replacing every six months in order to be effective even if they still produce visible light after this period.

Desert Lizards

"Desert lizard" is a general term for any lizard that comes from a particularly dry and arid region. A few examples would be Leopard Geckos, Bearded Dragons, and Bosc Monitors. Desert Lizards generally need higher temperatures than other lizards though this isn't always the case so be sure to fully research the species you are interested in before purchasing.

Desert Lizard require a very low humidity and so do not need to be sprayed, though water should be available at all times.

The main difference between a desert lizard's set up compared to other lizards is the substrate. There is a variety of substrates that can be used, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. Beech chips are the most popular substrate for desert lizards, though may cause problems if your Lizard accidently ingests it while chasing a cricket. Herbi Veg or Repti Maize are a safer alternative since they can be "passed through" if ingestion occurs.

Tropical Lizards

Tropical lizards require a much higher humidity, generally between 70 - 90% depending on the species (again, it is very important to fuly research the species you are interested in before purchase). This can be achieved by spraying the tank daily with a mister spray. You can use a hygrometer to measure the humidity levels.

We recommend using orchid bark as the substrate as it holds humidity well. Sphagnum moss, coco fibre, and forest bedding are other natural alternatives.

Mold and mites can be a problem in tropical vivariums because of the higher humidity. It is very important that the vivarium is checked daily for faeces and other mess and to remove them immediately. This is true for all reptiles and not just tropical lizards.
